Urge Assemblyman to Resign After Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Target: New York’s 53rd Assembly District Representative, Assemblyman Vito Lopez

Goal: Urge New York Assemblyman, Vito Lopez, to resign after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from female staffers and improper use of taxpayer money.

After investigation, the Assembly Ethics Committee found that Assemblyman Vito Lopez had groped and used sexually suggestive language with female staffers. A separate set of sexual harassment charges were settled in secret using personal, state, and possibly campaign funds to quell conflict before the re-election in November. Please sign this petition and join many legislators in urging Assemblyman Vito Lopez to resign from office after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace.

The New York Times spoke with former staffers of Lopez’s who described the working environment under the former chairman of the Brooklyn Democratic Party as intimidating and threatening. Reportedly, 71 year old Lopez only hires attractive women to veer between his crude jokes and fierce tirades in the workplace culture where he has made these behaviors permissible. One former staff member said, “He would comment on a shirt I was wearing and say “I’d like it better if you didn’t have a bra on.” Encouraging staff to go unsupported was apparently brought up quite a bit, along with requests for short skirts and high heels. Lopez is also accused of routinely complimenting his female staff on their figures, inquiring and giving advice regarding their personal lives, with special attention given to “well endowed” employees.

These allegations come after news that a separate sexual misconduct case was settled in secret using $130,000 in taxpayer money. Although the Assembly Ethics Committee scolded Lopez and stripped him of his leadership roles in the Assembly, he has not been removed from office. Many other legislators are calling for Lopez to resign in the wake of these new and old sexual harassment allegations that have not yet become criminal charges.

Please sign this petition to urge Assemblyman Vito Lopez to resign in the face of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace, and for using taxpayer money to secretly settle previous allegations of sexual misconduct. Lopez is an elected official and the voters have a right to call for his resignation. It is unacceptable for Lopez to have the privilege of continuing to serve New York, all the while harassing the government employees that run his office.

Dear Assemblyman Vito,

I am writing to urge you to resign from your position as representative of New York’s 53rd Assembly District, in the face of past and current allegations of sexual misconduct by female staffers. Your use of tax payer money to secretly pay off two staffers with complaints of improper workplace behavior is evidence enough that you do not posses the judgment necessary to serve as a legislator. Your continued presence in the Assembly is distracting and unethical. Please take a moment to reflect on your actions and think about the damage you have caused to your reputation and influence in public service. I am urging you to step down as a representative in favor of an ethical official people can safely work under, and citizens can trust.

The $103,000 settlement you secretly divided between two staffers alleging sexual misconduct is reason for dismissal alone. Not only did you use taxpayer money to silence the women, but you involved Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver in your dirty work, who is now also under fire for his involvement and actions surrounding your misconduct. As an elected official you are held to the highest standards of ethical practices, standards you have proven are too high for you to subscribe. You are no longer fit to serve as a legislator and are no longer the man who was elected by constituents of New York’s 53rd Assembly.

Please acknowledge your wrongdoings, and prevent another staffer from having to work around your inappropriate behavior by resigning from the Assembly.
