Success: Chile Rejects Proposed Iron Mine to Protect Penguins

Target: Marcelo Mena, Environment Minister of Chile

Goal: Praise the rejection of a proposed mine that would have threatened the habitat of vulnerable Humboldt penguins.

A planned iron mine that would have exported millions of tons of iron a year and was projected to be worth $2.5 billion has been halted due to concerns that its construction would endanger the threatened Humboldt penguin and other marine life. Following a decision from a committee led by Chile’s environment minister, Marcelo Mena, the company owning the proposed Dominga Complex Mine is left with no other options unless they can demonstrate that their project would not harm protected species.

One of the major concerns the Chilean government brought up was the fact that the mine would have been built in an area near a Humboldt penguin reserve, believed by scientists to be one of the few remaining places where this species thrives. Several endangered species of whale as well as sea otters also call the reserve home, and would also have been threatened by the mine.

Thanks to worldwide outcry and petitions urging Chile to stop allowing mining companies to exploit the region, such as this one from ForceChange, these protected species will now have a chance to survive. Sign this petition to thank Mena for standing up for Chile’s marine wildlife, including the Humboldt penguin.

Dear Minister Mena,

Thank you for listening to the voices of Chilean citizens and millions worldwide in taking a stand against powerful mining interests. Even though the proposed Dominga Mine Complex would have likely been worth a lot of money, this is a positive sign that the government of Chile is prioritizing the long-term survival of protected wildlife species such as the Humboldt penguin.

We, the undersigned, praise your decision to halt the mine’s construction and ask that you continue to defend Chile’s wildlife in the future.
