Target: Maine Congress
Goal: Support the legalization of same sex marriage in Maine
Despite a history of opposition to gay marriage within the state, voters in Maine will see the issue on the ballot come November. Because the vote is being issued in a presidential election year when it is likely that many young voters will be headed to the polls, there is great hope that the initiative will pass with flying colors.
While many supporters of the ballot initiative are hopeful for a positive outcome, history has showed the fight for gay marriage has rarely been won at the polls. Every state where same sex marriage is currently legal has been made possible through legal action and court rulings, while issues on the ballot have continuously been voted down. However, much of the support for the issue this time around revolves around the strongly advertised idea that clergy and religious institutions would not be forced to perform marriage ceremonies against their will or beliefs.
Many people in Maine and around the country see gay marriage as a non-issue; however, it remains an issue that is difficult to pass through the voting process. Sign this petition and support the gay marriage initiative on the Maine ballot in November, which grants equal rights to gay couples in the eyes of the state.
To the Members of the Maine Congress,
It is exciting to see the issue of same sex marriage on the November ballot for Maine citizens to be able to voice their opinion on. As the United States progresses towards a more equal country, it is exciting to see each state actively taking a role in the transition and depending on the voices of their constituents to do so.
While many Maine citizens are supportive of gay marriage, there is some fear, based on the history of the country, that the initiative will not pass in the polls come November. However, with your support, many will feel confident in their decisions and not be afraid to vote on the topic. We urge you to support the same-sex marriage initiative on the November ballot and help America become a freer and more equal democracy.
