Thank President Obama for Answering Questions on Reddit

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: To thank the President for participating in a recent question and answer session on social news site Reddit.

While the many presidential candidates have been known to travel town to town and attend local meetings and political rally events, President Barack Obama proved once again that he can reach out to a younger and more tech-savvy constituent such as those that use the social news website Reddit. During his regional campaign tour, the President took a couple of hours out of his day to answer questions submitted online by the website’s followers (the event is known as an AMA, or “Ask Me Anything”), with topics ranging from the poor job economy for recent college grads to his plans for changing campaign finance. The president even answered less serious questions such as who his favorite basketball player is and how the White House beer is brewed.

By reaching out to Redditors, Barack Obama did much more than prove he is still socially accessible. He showed that communication with American youth on their own terms is important to him in his campaign, and while many responses were formulated to be politically non-controversial, he also proved that he is willing to address the specific interests of American youth should he be reelected come November. However, Reddit is not a community made up entirely of young Americans; the President was also faced with questions from older American citizens as well as people of all ages from around the world.

It is a common occurrence that young people often fail to have their voices heard by politicians. By talking to youth in an environment where they are comfortable, Barack Obama allowed hundreds of thousands of people across American and around the world to voice their concerns and potentially have those concerns addressed by the leader of the country. Thank Barack Obama for taking the time to participate in the Reddit AMA and connecting with a unique subset of the population in a way that few prominent politicians have done before.

Dear Barack Obama,

While young people in this country still struggle to have their voices heard in the political arena, you went so far as to connect with many young people on their own level by participating in an AMA on Reddit. However, the site not only caters to American youth; you also allowed older American and citizens of other countries of the world to have a chance at posing questions and comments to you. While other political candidates often overlook the importance of young voters and communicating directly with ones constituency, you have again proven yourself to be of a higher political caliber.

We know that you are very busy during this heated election season. For you to take time out of your day to channel energy specifically into an online community such as Reddit is rare, if not even unheard of for someone of your status. That is why we are writing today to say thank you for your participation and honest comments in the Reddit AMA and best of luck in the election season.
