Do Not Allow Utah NBC Affiliate to Censor Show about Gay Couple

Target: Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL Broadcasting

Goal: Don’t censor “The New Normal”, a show about a gay couple

Ryan Murphy’s newest television show “The New Normal” is set to air on NBC. People in Utah, however, may not be able to watch the show because an NBC affiliate wants to censor it. “The New Normal” is a show about a gay couple who are trying to have a baby via a surrogate mother, who happens to be a single mom. The NBC affiliate, which happens to be owned by a Mormon church, claims that the show will be detrimental to the community because it does not promote a healthy standard of living.

According to the Associated Press, the CEO of KSL’s parent company, Bonneville International Jeff Simpson said, “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time. The dialogue is excessively rude and crude; the scenes are too explicit and the stereotypes are offensive on all sides.” The network claims that its decision to cancel the show has nothing to do with the fact that the characters are gay but rather the fact that the content of the show contains demeaning stereotypes and strong sexual dialogue. KSL has also banned “Saturday Night Live” and “The Playboy Club” in the past.

NBC is defending the show, stating that the nuclear family today is progressively changing. Viewers in Utah are upset over KSL’s decision to ban the show and they have a right to be. KSL cannot determine what people are allowed to watch. If viewers want to watch “The New Normal,” they should be to assess the show easily. There are more and more television shows that incorporate gay and lesbian characters nowadays. However, “The New Normal” is one of the first shows in which the main characters are gay. KSL’s decision to censor the show is unfair for its viewers.

People in Utah should be able to watch what they want and KSL must not be selective and allow people to watch “The New Normal” if they choose to do so.

Dear Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL Broadcasting,

Viewers in Utah want to watch “The New Normal” and your network is choosing to ban the show. Your claims that the show is inappropriate and stereotypical are biased and you must let the viewers judge the content for themselves. “The New Normal” is certainly not the first show to have gay characters and it is unfair to censor the show because it does not fit the idea of a nuclear family.

KSL has censored other shows, such as “Saturday Night Live” and “The Playboy Club” for sexually explicit content. It is unfair for you to select what people can or cannot watch and you must not censor “The New Normal.” The show has not even aired and the content seen in trailers may be out of context. The show should be aired on television and people should be able to watch it if they choose to do so.
