Target: Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Leader of the Scottish Catholic Church
Goal: Stop campaign against Scotland’s marriage equality bill
Scotland’s progressive efforts in their attempt to legalize gay marriage have angered the Scottish Roman Catholic Church. Scotland plans on legalizing gay marriage with the first possible union by 2015 which would be a huge step for the country. However, the leader of the church, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, has led protests against the bill, claiming that a union is supposed to be between a man and a woman.
As a form of opposition, Catholic bishops wrote a letter that was read recently to the 500 parishes of the Church. The letter called for a change in the definition of marriage by clearly stating that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. The letter writes, “The church’s teaching on marriage is unequivocal: It is uniquely the union of a man and a woman and it is wrong that governments, politicians or parliaments should seek to alter or destroy that reality.” Scotland will become the first part of Great Britain that legalizes gay marriage if the bill passes.
Cardinal O’Brien described gay marriages as “grotesque.” He claims that he will do whatever it takes to stop the bill from passing. The government, however, plans to continue with the bill and reassures that religious freedoms will remain protected. It is important to acknowledge the fact that the bill does not force or require any church official to carry out the ceremony. Clergies have the right to refuse to officiate a gay wedding. Legalizing gay marriages will not harm anyone, but rather, allow people who love each other the chance to express their love. However, the church is still adamant in condemning gay marriages.
Everyone deserves to be happy, and thus the church must respect the decisions of others. It cannot define unity for the rest of the population and it most certainly cannot make marriage exclusive. The Scottish Roman Catholic Church must stop their attempts in denying people their right to a marriage.
Dear Cardinal Keith O’Brien,
Scotland’s progressive decision to try to legalize gay marriage is a huge step for the nation. If the bill passes, Scotland will be the first segment of Britain to legalize gay marriage. The actions of your church, the Scottish Roman Catholic Church, have been unforgivable and discriminating. Marriage is a union between loved ones and the gender of the parties should not play a factor. The love in a gay marriage is as strong and as right as the love in a union between a man and a woman.
The letter that was read to the 500 parishes throughout Scotland was beyond harsh. You cannot redefine marriage and make marriage an exclusive concept. Everyone deserves the right to be happy regardless of who they are and who they love. Gay marriage is slowly happening throughout the world and it is important to accept and help this cause. Please stop the protests against the legalization of gay marriage.
