Target: Jean-Marc Ayrault, Prime Minister of France and Francois Hollande, President of France
Goal: Applaud upcoming introduction of a marriage equality bill in Parliament
The Prime Minister of France recently announced that the French government will be introducing a marriage equality bill to Parliament this fall. Not only would this bill legalize same-sex marriages, it would also authorize same-sex adoption. France has offered civil partnerships for same-sex couples which confer the same legal benefits as marriage since the late 1990s. However, these partnerships do not confer adoption rights, an area in which France has long lagged behind its European neighbors. Prime Minister Ayrault’s announcement follows through on a promise made by President Francois Hollande, who supported marriage equality in his bid for election.
With support from the Prime Minister and the President, both of whom are socialists, the bill will move on to the French National Assembly and the Senate, the former of which is controlled by the socialist party and the latter of which has a left-wing majority. This should very likely ensure the bill’s success, despite a probability of opposition from religious groups in the country. Thank the Prime Minister and President for their support and congratulate them on the upcoming bill.
Dear Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and President Francois Hollande,
I write today following your announcement that you will be introducing a marriage equality bill to Parliament this coming fall. I would like to applaud your decision in this matter, and thank you for following through on promises you had made regarding a commitment to marriage equality and the rights of same-sex couples to adopt children. Adopting this legislation will bring France up to date with policies already practiced in many other European countries. It gives same-sex couples in France legal recognition and societal equality, and may be a positive example for other countries to do the same.
Thank you for your support of LGBT equality. I hope that this bill will find success in the months to come.
