Target: President of the United States, Barack Obama
Goal: Implement a no-fly zone to prevent further civilian massacres in Northern Syria
Rebels have been fighting the Syrian regime seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad for the past 17 months. Violence resulting in an average of 200 deaths a day is on the rise with the government’s recent air strikes on populated areas of Northern Syria. Please sign this petition and urge President Obama to join other nations in implementing a no-fly zone in Northern Syria to prevent mass civilian fatalities.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Syrian opposition reports that 4,000 people have been killed in August alone, the deadliest since the uprising began. As the regime increases warfare, many are calling on the United Nations to step in and prevent the indiscriminate air strikes which are killing innocent citizens and destroying the country’s historical landmarks. France is in favor of the no-fly zone and has called for the establishment of an “international coalition” to implement the sanction, thereby suggesting action outside of the United Nations is being considered.
Turkey and the United States have discussed the possibility, although Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, has said “greater in-depth analysis” was needed. While a no-fly zone over the whole country would be tantamount to war, the French defense minister suggests a coalition of Western states, Turkey, and Arab powers could close Syrian airspace between Aleppo and the Turkish boarder.
What began as street protests demanding political reform and an end to four decades of al-Assad family rule has led to civil war. Al-Assad has been criticized for disregarding human rights, economic lapses, and corruption during his 12 years as president. Although expected to take a more liberal approach than his father and predecessor, al-Assad has done little to further democracy or human rights in Syria.
Please sign this petition and urge President Obama to join forces with other nations in implementing a no-fly zone over Northern Syria, in an effort to prevent massive, unnecessary, and indiscriminate killings of innocent civilians.
Dear Mr. President,
Violence between the Syrian government and rebels seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad has escalated to include devastating air strikes by the regime. Air strikes target populated areas, killing innocent civilians and destroying the country’s landmarks. I am writing to encourage you to join with countries like Turkey and France to implement a no-fly zone over northern Syria to protect civilians from death and mass destruction.
Protests against al-Assad’s rule started about 17 months ago as street protests. Having now erupted into a full fledged civil war, rebels claim they will fight until al-Assad is out of office. Al-Assad’s family has ruled Syria for the past four decades. The President is accused of disregarding human rights, economic lapses, and corruption during his 12-year reign. Although expected to rule more liberally than his father and predecessor, al-Assad has done little to further democracy or human rights in Syria.
As the regime continues killing their own citizens, some feel the United Nations needs to step in to protect the lives of innocent people. France has called for an “international coalition” to join forces outside of the United Nations to circumvent Russia’s allegiance to Syria, while implementing a no-fly zone. Turkey and the United States have discussed the possibility although no action has taken place. The French defense minister believes a coalition of Western states, Turkey, and Arab powers could close Syrian air space between Aleppo and the Turkish boarder.
Please protect innocent Syrian civilians from massive destruction and fatalities caused by government air strikes on populated areas. Implement a no-fly zone over northern Syria to keep war efforts on the ground in an effort to prevent innocent civilian deaths.
