Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop the United States Government from sharing license plate tracking data with third party organizations
Every time a car crosses the border of the United States its license plate is photographed. Until recently, these photos were thought to only be used by our government for official purposes; but documents recently obtained via the Freedom of Information Act show that these photos are being shared with third-party insurance companies. Automatic license plate recognizing cameras are now being installed in cities across the country on fixtures like bridges, as well as on police patrol cars. As this camera system becomes more ubiquitous, the continued sharing of data with third parties will allow corporations access to the private location data of American citizens without their knowledge or consent. We must ensure our government does not share our private license plate data with any third parties.
Documents obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) outline how our government has been sharing license plate recognition data with an organization called the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which represents hundreds of insurance companies. This information can from there be shared with unknown third parties, who would then have access to the private location data of ordinary citizens; thus enabling people’s movements to be retroactively monitored by non-government agencies. As it currently stands, this information is being shared without any provisions governing the sharing process. Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that there is no way to know just exactly who has access to this data beyond the NICB; and as this recognition technology continues to spread, more location data about where we go and when will be available to unknown third parties.
There is no shortage of examples of individual freedoms being eroded in our nation today. This is just another instance of our government exploiting what should be private information. Insurance companies and other third party entities have no business tracking the whereabouts of private citizens. Act now and keep this private information out of the hands of any non-government agency.
Dear President Obama,
We urge you to cease the sharing of license plate data between our government agencies and private insurance firms. As citizens of this republic we understand that some privacy and freedoms must be sacrificed for the safety and well-being of us all. However, insurance companies and other third party entities have no right to any private location information regarding the travel habits of American citizens without our consent.
We ask you to immediately halt this practice and ensure our whereabouts and destinations remain solely our own knowledge, and not in the hands of unknown, unregulated, and uncaring organizations. The audacity of greed is shamelessly on display here sir, and we would ask that you restore our hope in freedom and liberty by ending this unauthorized and unethical violation of our fundamental rights as citizens of this great country.
