Don’t Cut Funding for Recreational Nature Trails

recreational trail

Target: State governors

Goal: Do not opt out of funding intended for the construction, maintenance, and development of recreation trails.

Due to a change in federal legislation, state governors are now allowed to opt out of receiving federal funding for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The program distributes federal funds to individual states in order to support the construction, maintenance, and development of all types of recreation trails. Unfortunately, many state governments do not prioritize recreational activities and would rather opt out of funding than dedicate the time to set the funds to good use.

In the Moving Ahead For Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) that Congress recently passed, state legislators recognized the importance of the RTP by deciding to continue providing dedicated funding. By promoting the maintenance and creation of trail programs and projects, the RTP encourages healthy outdoor recreation, fosters tourism and economic development, and provides access to treasured public lands. The funding-distribution process of the RTP has been well proven. A portion of the federal fuel taxes collected from non-highway, recreational user fees allows for the return of gas taxes to trail users.

If states choose to opt out of this important program, the funding cycle will be interrupted and organized trail planning and development would disappear. Sign the petition below to urge state governors to prioritize and support the Recreational Trails Program.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear State Governor,

I am writing to urge you to protect the Recreational Trails Program by choosing to receive funding.

Congress recently recognized the importance of the Recreational Trails Program by deciding to continue providing dedicated funding in the Moving Ahead For Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21).

I urge you not to opt out of receiving funding for this important program. Without the Recreational Trails Program, organized trail planning and development would disappear. Please support Recreational Trails in your state.

Sincerely,
