Guatemala: Respect Indigenous Pleas, Close Marlin Gold Mine as Promised

Target: Guatemalan Pres. Otto Pérez Molina

Goal: Keep promise to suspend operations at the Marlin Gold Mine in respect of local communities and environmental health.

After years of struggle, protest, and advocacy, indigenous communities in Guatemala, with the help of many allies, have succeeded in closing the Marlin gold mine in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. The Marlin gold mine, operated by the Canadian firm Goldcorp, has polluted Guatemalan rivers, destroyed venerated mountains, poisoned people living in its proximity, all while dividing communities. The company has even been implicated in the deaths of human rights activists.

In response, the impacted communities demonstrated their opposition to mining and filed complaints with international agencies. Their dedication paid off. After rulings against the mine by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the International Labor Organization, and the UN Commission on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the government of Guatemala agreed to suspend its operations permit in 2011. One year later, however, the mine is still open. Sign this petition and side with impacted Guatemalan communities who have struggled for years to see it close and will continue to experience the mine’s negative health and environmental effects. Tell the Guatemalan government to uphold its promise to  suspend the Marlin gold mine from doing business in San Miguel Ixtahuacán.

Dear Pres. Otto Pérez Molina,

Respect the outcry of San Miguel Ixtahuacán communities and shut down Goldcorp’s Marlin gold mine. After conducting environmental and community impact assessments, the Marlin mine has been deemed nothing short of horrible for Guatemalans. Creating health hazards and acting in defiance of requests for reform, the Marlin mine has no place in the local community or the economy. No monetary gain is worth the sacrificed health of your people. Put human rights first and deny the Marlin mine from further operation in your country.

Follow through with your 2011 promise to suspend the Marlin gold mine operations permit and see that it is shut down in the best interest of the people deeply impacted by the mine. Make their voices heard and protect them.
