Free Hong Kong Democracy Activists

Target: Xi Jinping, President of China

Goal: Pardon and free Hong Kong democracy activists Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow.

A Hong Kong court has imprisoned three democracy activists, as pressure mounts on Beijing to grant the city greater political autonomy.

Joshua Wong, 20, Nathan Law, 24 and Alex Chow, 27, now face prison sentences of between six to eight months for unlawful assembly, after climbing into a courtyard outside the city government offices. The act of defiance has been partly credited with sparking a wave of pro-democracy protests in 2014. Those protests have again been reignited by the imprisonment of the three activists, with tens of thousands of people in Hong Kong joining recent protests.

“This shows that the Hong Kong government, the Chinese Communist regime and the Department of Justice’s conspiracy to deter Hong Kong people from continuing to participate in politics and to protest using harsh laws and punishments has completely failed,” former student leader Lester Shum told Reuters.

To show your support for democracy in Hong Kong, please sign this petition demanding freedom for Wong, Law and Chow.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Xi,

We urge you to endorse a full pardon and the immediate release of Hong Kong democracy activists Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow. The trio are a symbol of Hong Kong’s desire for greater political autonomy and democracy free from interference from Beijing.

Despite the pledge of “one country, two systems” in 1997, the reality today is that many of the people of Hong Kong believe their internal affairs are increasingly being dictated by Beijing. This is unacceptable, and China must respect Hong Kong’s right to autonomy. As a first step towards this aim, we therefore call on you to do the right thing and endorse the release of these three young activists.

Sincerely,
