Investigate Hate Crime Against Muslims

Target: Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Angeles Division

Goal: Investigate hate crime at Muslim place of worship

A Muslim place of worship was recently vandalized with pig carcasses and the Council on American-Islamic Relations is now urging federal prosecutors to launch a hate crime investigation into the incident. Amidst a slew of suspected hate crimes across the nation, it is important that these suspicions be fully investigated and prosecuted in order to keep American’s safe, and preserve our right to worship. Please sign this petition and urge the FBI to investigate the assault as a federal hate crime in order to bring justice and protection to the Muslim community.

The Muslim community of San Bernardino County is awaiting approval to build an Islamic center on unincorporated land near Ontario, California. As they wait to break ground they have been using a home on the proposed site as a temporary place of worship. Unfortunately, according to eye witness accounts, two women threw pork legs onto the driveway of the proposed Al-Nur Islamic Center in a recent act of vandalism and discrimination.

Because Muslims are prohibited from eating pork and the incident occurred during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the Council on American-Islamic Relations is urging for a federal hate crime investigation. According to local reports, the Justice Department is aware of the incident and looking into the matter, although confirmation of a formal investigation has yet to be publicized.

Across the nation Muslims and their places of worship are under attack. A Wisconsin man opened fire in a Sikh temple on August 5th, an Illinois resident shot a pellet rifle at a mosque on August 10th, and a homemade bomb was tossed at an Islamic School, also in Illinois, on August 12th. These relatively mild attacks come on the heels of a Missouri hate crime where a mosque was reduced to ashes by suspected arsonists.

These attacks are most certainly hate crimes spurred by ignorance, stigmatization, and systematic discrimination fueled and maintained by a new phenomenon; Islamophobia. We must use this incident and others to send a message that this type of violence and assault will not be tolerated in America. Please sign this petition and urge the FBI to investigate the vandalism in Ontario, California as a hate crime against Muslims and Islam.

Dear Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Angeles Division,

A mosque in Ontario, California was the target of a hate crime where two women reportedly threw pig carcasses at the mosque while Muslims prayed inside. The attack was not only offensive because Muslims do not eat pork, but the incident occurred during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is asking the U.S. Justice Department to complete a federal hate crime investigation into the incident. Anti-Islam hate crimes are occurring at an alarming rate across the United States. Mosques are being vandalized, assaulted and one was burnt to the ground in an obvious message of hate, discrimination, and fear.

In order to show that violence and assault on a place of worship will not be tolerated, regardless of religion, investigation and prosecution of the responsible parties must be taken seriously. Eight attacks against Muslims occurred in a span of 11 days earlier this month. In an effort to prevent hate crimes and set a standard for inclusiveness, respect, and diversity, authorities must prosecute crimes appropriately. Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the council’s Greater Los Angeles chapter said, “The intention was to create fear, in intimidation and offense of the intended tart. That’s the nature of a hate incident.”

Please investigate the attack on Muslims in Ontario, California as a hate crime and send the message that bigotry, discrimination, and violence will not be tolerated by the FBI.
