Target: Spare Change News
Goal: To thank Spare Change News for helping to support homeless individuals for the last 20 years.
For the last 20 years, Spare Change News has helped homeless individuals in the New England area by providing them with employment and an open discussion forum. The newspaper company, which was started in 1992 by a group of homeless individuals and activists from Boston Jobs with Peace, employs people who have difficulty obtaining employment due to numerous adversities related to homelessness. The vendors purchase their newspapers for 25 cents each and then sell them back to the community for $1. By allowing vendors the freedom to sell the papers at their own rate, the organization attempts to prove that through opportunity and empowerment, disadvantaged people are capable of creating change and growth amongst themselves.
Homeless individuals face many barriers when it comes to obtaining jobs, such as lack of transportation and little specified training. To counteract this, the publication was purchased by the Homeless Empowerment Project which, alongside printing the publication, creates programs for economically disadvantaged people to get back on their feet. These programs include computer training classes and the creation of the Homeless Speakers’ Bureau, which trains people in public speaking so that they can share their stories of financial difficulty at paid speaking events.
Homelessness is a vicious cycle, often because employment is so difficult to obtain without a permanent address. However, organizations such as this one are helping homeless individuals to continue to live in and contribute to their communities. Sign this petition and thank Spare Change News for continuing to help empower and employ homeless individuals throughout the Boston area for 20 years.
Dear Spare Change News:
For the last twenty years, your organization has helped to employ and empower homeless individuals throughout New England. More importantly, Spare Change News has given the disadvantaged people of Boston a platform to voice their opinions, ideas, and dreams, and through doing so, has allowed them to remain individuals in a faceless city. The work that you have done and continue to do affects so many people, both those that are homeless and those of us that buy the paper and are consistently taken aback by the professionalism, depth, and beauty of the publication.
Homeless individuals face an obstacle course of difficulties in obtaining work, and through the Spare Change Newspaper and the Homeless Empowerment Project, they are able to slowly learn skills that will help them succeed in the competitive and ever-changing job market. We commend your unending dedication to breaking the cycle of poverty and truly think that Spare Change News stands as an inspirational example for the rest of the country and the rest of the world.
