Target: Bruce Benson, President of the University of Colorado
Goal: Applaud the University of Colorado for banning guns in on-campus residence halls
Recently, the University of Colorado announced that they will not be allowing students with concealed weapon permits to reside in on-campus residence halls. After the uproar of gun violence in the news, the University wants to do everything possible to keep students safe. Although the Colorado Supreme Court recently ruled that people with a concealed carry permit are allowed on college campuses, the University of Colorado made sure not to violate this law. In fact, they are providing specific off-campus housing for those students who want to carry their gun at school. They are making it safer for all students while still providing housing for students who wish to carry a gun.
Not only is this a smart policy, it is extremely generous. Many college dorms will not allow residents to have candles in their room, let alone guns, so for the University of Colorado to provide special housing specifically for those with guns is very generous. Students are still allowed to carry their weapons on them, but are not allowed to bring them into on-campus residence halls. This policy makes both weapon carriers and non-weapon carriers happy by providing a safe and accommodating environment. Applaud the University of Colorado for their ban on guns in on-campus residence halls.
Dear Bruce Benson,
Your revolutionary policy on not allowing guns in residence halls is an excellent idea that will help keep students safe. After the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that people with a concealed carry permit are allowed to be on college campuses, it seemed that universities in Colorado instantly became less safe. However, with your policy, the University of Colorado does not only obey this law, but it assures that students will feel safe.
Not only are you assuring safety to students and their parents, but you are also accommodating those who have a concealed weapon permit and wish to have their weapon at college. By providing them separate off-campus dorms, they are able to receive housing while still carrying their weapon. At many universities, it is common knowledge that guns are not allowed in residence halls, but in a state like Colorado, this presented a serious problem. You did an excellent job of appeasing all involved parties and meanwhile still keeping students safe. Thank you for creating this smart and efficient policy.
