Demand High School Parking Fee Be Removed

Target: Bob Mitchell, chairman of the Scarborough school board

Goal: Remove excessive parking fee for students

Recently at Scarborough High School in Maine, students were told that they would have to pay a fee if they wanted to park their cars in the school parking lot. The fee is an outstanding $100 a year just to park in a lot that was previously free for students. The township claims that the fee was being talked about for a few months ahead of time, but parents and students were not aware of it. The students should have been told about the fee before it was enforced in order to voice their opinion on the matter. However, the fee was instead suddenly and blindly imposed on the students.

Officials say that the fee is due to a million dollar cut in the budget. They believe that charging students to park at school will make up for this loss. The budget cut is not the students’ fault, and they are likely going to suffer in other areas from the budget cuts, such as using old textbooks and eliminating extracurricular activities. Also, this fee is not going to amount to a million dollars in order to make for the budget cut. Demand that this unnecessary and outrageous parking fee be removed.

Dear Bob Mitchell,

The parking fee that was recently imposed on students at Scarborough High School is unnecessary and must be removed. You can’t suddenly charge students to park in a lot that was previously free, especially without warning. Apparently the fee was talked about for months ahead of time, but students and parents were not told about this. The students should have been able to voice their opinion about the fee before it was enforced, but they were not told about the fee until after, and are now forced to protest.

Apparently, this parking fee is a solution to the fact that there was a million dollar budget cut for the school district. It is unrealistic to think that charging students to park will make up for that budget cut. Due to the change in budget, things such as textbooks and extracurricular activities will likely suffer. Students are already facing the consequences of the budget cut in many ways, and the parking fee should not be another one. You must remove this ridiculous fee and allow students at Scarborough High School to continue to park for free.
