Target: Members of Congress
Goal: Mandate that employers offer paid sick days to all private-sector workers
More than 40 million American workers receive no paid sick leave for themselves or to care for family. Legislation within the Healthy Families Act would expand access to paid sick leave for private-sector workers, adding coverage for more than 30 million people. Please sign this petition and urge Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act to provide humane and compassionate sick benefits for American workers.
During the recent economic downturn, companies have been limiting benefits like sick days in order to cut costs. The result is a new phenomenon referred to as presenteeism. When workers must go to work sick they are usually unproductive, but they are present; presenteeism. As more and more workers must choose presenteeism or risk their employment, companies are financially seeing the cost of an ill and unproductive workforce. Not only does the ill employee perform less productively, but they also risk spreading sickness and causing more absenteeism and presenteeism. It is estimated that the cost of presenteeism among US employers ranges from $150 to $250 billion annually.
The Healthy Families Act would “allow workers in businesses with 15 or more employees to earn up to seven job-protected sick days each year to be used to recover from their own illness, access preventative care, or provide care for a sick family member. Paid sick days would be accrued at a minimum of one hour for every 30 hours worked up to 56 hours (seven days) per year. Employers would be entitled to certification if an employee uses more than three paid sick days in a row.”
Please sign this petition and urge members of Congress to vote in favor of the Healthy Families Act and expand paid sick day benefits to all American workers.
Dear Members of Congress,
The United States is the only industrial nation where workers are not guaranteed paid sick leave for themselves or to care for a sick family member. 40 million American workers receive no paid sick days. The country’s lack of compassion and humane work standards has resulted in a US average of $150 to $250 billion in loss from presenteeism. As more and more workers are forced to work while sick or risk losing their jobs, American companies are feeling the effects. Low productivity and snowball sickness that often results from one sick employee affecting more is costing companies financially and workers mentally.
The Healthy Families Act would expand paid sick days to all employees in the private sector in companies with 15 employees or more. Employees stand to earn up to seven paid sick days or 56 hours per year, with the option for employers to increase the accrual rate and/or maximum per year. The legislation stands to cut down on presenteeism costs, increase company morale, and productivity, and send a message of appreciation and understanding to American workers.
Please support the Healthy Families Act and provide workers with realistic benefits to combat sickness, preventative health, and the ability to care for sick family.
