Target: Liberman Broadcasting Inc. and EstrellaTV Network
Goal: Applaud the decision to drop José Luis Sin Censura, a Spanish-language show which used uncensored anti-gay, anti-Latino slurs and epiphets
For 18 months, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has been waging a campaign against the TV show José Luis Sin Censura, a Spanish-language Jerry Springer which made frequent use of homophobic and anti-Latino slurs in its dialogues. Guests on the show would frequently be subject to anti-gay epithets and and profanity thrown at them by the audience. The show also frequently featured female nudity and showed women being beaten in a number of instances. The content shown would have been typically been heavily censored if shown in English, but was shown on SpanishTV with limited oversight.
Protests from GLAAD and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) resulted in AT&T and Time Warner pulling commercials for the show in 2011, but it continued to air on the EstrellaTV Network until recently, when GLAAD and NHMC announced that their campaign had successfully resulted in José Luis Sin Censura being removed from the air permanently. Thank Liberman Broadcasting Inc., which produced and broadcasted the show, and EstrellaTV Network for removing this offensive program from the air and policing hateful and offensive material no matter what language it is broadcast in.
Dear Liberman Broadcasting Inc. and EstrellaTV Network,
It has come to my attention that, after 18 months of protesting from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the National Hispanic Media Coalition, you have finally made the choice to remove the program José Luis Sin Censura from air permanently. This program made frequent use of language both anti-Latino and homophobic, and often showed female nudity and women being beaten or in fights. The offensive content featured on the show was censored infrequently at best, and never to the extent that English-language content is censored when broadcast on public TV.
I applaud your decision to pull the show from the air permanently and I hope that, in the future, you will demonstrate greater commitment to policing shows for hateful and offensive content regardless of what language they may be broadcast in.
