Target: St. Petersburg Governor, Georgy Poltavchenko
Goal: Overturn subjective anti-gay laws that prevent gay pride parades and cultural activities
Earlier this year the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly passed the so-called Gay Propaganda law penalizing “the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors.” The law prevents gay pride rallies and parades, limits cultural activities like exhibits, plays, and films, and quells any deviation from the majority of the party and its leadership. Please sign this petition and demand that St. Petersburg overturn the subjective Gay Propaganda law criminalizing homosexuality and preventing individual freedoms.
Despite the repeal of Soviet-era laws that criminalized homosexuality in 1993, anti-gay sentiment remains widespread in Russia, especially among political officials. Church officials and leading Russian politicians have been calling for the return of federal level anti-gay laws in order to protect Russian youth. Dmitry Pershin, head of the Church’s youth council, praised the Gay Propaganda law for “helping to protect children from information manipulation by minorities that promote sodomy.”
The government crackdown on public protest, civic activity, and the liberalization of society was challenged at a recent Madonna concert in the Northern capital. Madonna publicized the show as a protest to the hate law by distributing pink “tolerance” bracelets, barring her back with the words “No fear”, revealing her buttocks, and encouraging the crowd to “fight for the right to be free.” Author of the anti-gay bill, Vladimir Milonov, is seeking penalties up to $16,000 for Madonna’s gay propaganda because minors were present at the show.
Please sign this petition and demand that Russian authorities overturn the Gay Propaganda law in favor of equality, freedom, and lack of unbiased justification for prosecution.
Dear Governor Poltavchenko,
The St. Petersburg hate law preventing gay propaganda is both ridiculous legally and civilly in its message and implementation. Despite the widespread discrimination against homosexuals in Russia, the so-called Gay Propaganda law is not legally sound. The law leaves much interpretation up to officials and prevents civilians from living an authentic lifestyle. By supporting and enforcing the anti-gay law without any guidelines or specific stipulations, you are inviting an abuse of power by Russian officials.
Same-sex couples, gay pride parades, and cultural differences are not a threat to the children of Russia. Just like heterosexuals, the gay community encompasses people of all walks of life, with each contributing something unique to the population. It is archaic to even suggest discriminatory laws against homosexuals in the modern world where equality continues to be the goal for success. The ignorant and shocking comments made by church and political officials are reprehensible and extremely offensive to heterosexuals and homosexuals worldwide.
Please stop vilifying homosexuals as perverts and pedophiles and overturn the Gay Propaganda law criminalizing subjective behavior. The law itself is unjust, and the consequences of promoting and endorsing hate will lead to civil unrest.
