Target: Members of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany
Goal: Thank Germany’s Constitutional Court for extending tax equality for same-sex couples in “registered partnerships.”
Germany’s constitutional court has extended the same tax benefits provided to married heterosexuals to same-sex couples in “registered partnerships.” Please sign this petition and thank the constitutional court for strengthening gay rights by acknowledging same-sex relationships with the expansion of tax rights.
“Registered partnership” is the legal term used in Germany to describe same-sex relationships similar to marriage. Recognized since 2001, registered partners enjoyed most of the rights of married couples, excluding joint adoption and full tax benefits. The new ruling makes a bold statement amidst the country’s heated debates on the status of homosexual partnerships. Members of the court say, “We want to recognize that life partners with a registered partnership have set up a framework for a long-term relationship based on mutual trust and affection.” As the country becomes more accepting and inclusive of the gay community, Germans can see the conservative ideals they value being lived by gay couples. Hopefully the vision of a different type of family will continue to advance civil rights for same-sex couples and families.
As Germany moves toward equality it is important that we applaud their progress and encourage legislature that provides civil rights to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. Please sign this petition and show your support for Germany’s decision to extend the same tax benefits afforded to married couples to registered partners.
Dear Mr. Voßkuhle,
The constitutional court’s recent decision to extend tax benefits to registered partners is commendable, noble, and respected worldwide. As Germany debates the status of same-sex partnerships, the court’s verdict sends a supportive and inclusive message to the gay community. As debates continue, the door is now opened to tackle the other tangible that separates registered partners from married partners: joint adoption.
As more legislation in favor of equal opportunity is proposed, it is important to continue to make these bold decisions that may not please everyone involved. I am signing this petition in support and appreciation of the constitutional court’s judgment to expand tax benefits to registered partnerships. Thank you for acknowledging the commitment and authenticity of gay relationships with the same rights afforded to heterosexual marriages.
