Target: Barack Obama
Goal: To thank Barack Obama for opposing the Boy Scouts’ ban on gay members.
Even though Barack Obama serves as the Boy Scouts’ honorary president, he recently released a statement in opposition to the group’s ban on homosexual members. The President stated that even though he supports the group’s main goals of educating and helping build character in American youth, he is also opposed to discrimination in all forms, including on the basis of sexual orientation. The President’s statements come a few weeks after the Scouts announced its continuation of a policy that would not grant membership to open homosexuals, an announcement that has seen a great deal of controversy over the last month.
Every president since the beginning of the 1900’s has served as Honorary President for the group, and Obama has made no announcement of plans to change that. However, his public dissent of the Scouts’ policy reaffirms the his support for equality and rights for all Americans. The Boy Scouts of America responded to the comments saying that it agrees to disagree, but respects the President’s opinion.
While the Boy Scouts of America continues its outdated and discriminatory practice of maintaining an anti-gay policy platform, the President of the United States and the Honorary President of the Scouts has reminded the country once again that rights and responsibilities for all make this country, and the families within it, great. Sign this petition thanking President Obama for his opposition of the Boy Scouts’ policy and his continued support of equal rights for all people.
Dear President Obama,
It is with great thanks that we write today for your unending support for the LGBT community. Even as Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America, you were not afraid to announce your opposition to the outdated and discriminatory ban on homosexual members. Because of your unfaltering support of equal rights, this country grows stronger and continues to be a shining example of equality and democracy within the international community.
While we cannot stop the Boy Scouts from imposing its bigoted and hurtful ban, we can gather together in support of those groups that are discriminated against and work towards a more accepting and righteous future as a nation. Thank you again for your opposition to the Scouts’ anti-gay policy, and for your continued support of equal rights for all people.
