Justice for Horses Found Dead and Decomposing in Their Stalls

Target: William V. Grady, Dutchess County District Attorney, New York

Goal: Punish owner of horrific farm where horses were reportedly found dead of starvation.

A former NYPD officer is facing animal cruelty charges after a raid on her property revealed 11 dead horses, some of them decomposing in their stalls, according to reports. A dead 2-month-old foal was found alongside its mother in a nursing position. According to the Hudson Valley SPCA (HVSPCA), “The horses presumably starved to death. The deceased horse carcasses were found to be in a state of severe decomposition.”

Also found on the farm was a starving and emaciated stallion that was seen eating wood in order to try to survive, say reports. According to Gene Hecht, the Hudson Valley SPCA chief of humane law enforcement for the HVSPCA, “This horse was left standing in feces with split, infected, overgrown hooves.” He was also reportedly left without water.

Jeanne Ryan, 48, was arrested and charged with one count of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor, and five counts of failure to properly dispose of dead animals. She denies the allegations, but is soon scheduled to appear in court. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail.

The suffering that these animals allegedly endured is unimaginable. In order to ensure justice for these animals, the person responsible must be punished harshly. Sign the petition below to ask the prosecutor to seek the maximum possible punishment for Ryan, if she is found guilty.

Dear Mr. Grady,

Eleven horses were recently found dead, many of them still locked in their stalls, according to reports. Authorities say that the horses died of starvation, including a mare and her 2-month-old foal, which was found in the nursing position. Forced to live among the decomposing corpses of other horses, a stallion was found emaciated and eating wood in an attempt to survive, reports indicate. He allegedly had no access to water and was force to live in filthy conditions, and his hooves were split, infected, and overgrown.

This alleged neglect caused intense and prolonged suffering and must not be taken lightly. In order to ensure that no more animals are subjected to this same abuse, the person responsible must be punished to the fullest extent of the law, if found guilty.

  2. Patricia Dumais says:

I often wonder, in cases like these, did no one else notice that something was very wrong? Did this person not have friends or neighbours who could have reported what was going on to the authorities before it was too late? Or is it that the authorities did not act in time? It’s all very disturbing and tragic for the poor animals.
