Stop Abuse at Internet Addiction ‘Boot Camps’

Target: Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Do not allow centers for internet addiction to use abusive and harmful methods to ‘cure’ patients.

A teenager has died after 48 hours in an internet addiction ‘boot camp’ in China. According to reports, he sustained multiple injuries, and the staff of the treatment center are being held by police. These types of institutions are common but controversial in China, and some use inhumane methods such as beating and electroshock therapy in order to ‘treat’ their patients.

According to his mother, the boy who died was “covered in scars” when she was allowed to see his body. The facility that she and the boy’s father sent him to advertised its use of “psychological counselling and physical training.” This is also not the first time that a death has been related to these ‘boot camps.’ In 2016, after allegedly suffering abuse in one of these camps, a girl reportedly killed her mother for sending her there.

Although legislation has been drafted to combat these inhumane and horrific practices, it still has not been passed and is not being enforced. The law would encourage using family education as the primary solution for internet and gaming addiction, and also states that “No individuals or organizations are allowed to force or abuse juveniles in seeking to cure Internet addiction that will hurt their mental and physical health or infringe their legitimate rights.” This includes the use of electroshock therapy.

Sign below to protect children from abuse and demand that legislation such as this be immediately passed and enforced.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Jinping,

The tragic death of a teenager after he was sent to a treatment center for internet and gaming addiction is evidence that these addiction ‘boot camps’ are abusive. Practices that cause physical and mental harm to patients—including but not limited to beatings and electroshock therapy—must be prohibited by law, and those laws must be strongly enforced.

Minors are sent to these addiction centers often without their consent, resulting in still more tragedies, like the girl who reportedly killed her mother for sending her to one such facility where she was allegedly abused. These tragedies are preventable, and to allow them to continue is inhumane and unacceptable. I urge you to immediately pass and enforce legislation protecting patients from abuse at the hands of these ‘treatment centers.’

Sincerely,
