Target: California Joint Legislative Audit Committee

Goal: Audit California school districts’ compliance with laws that improve student safety

Equality California and the Gay Straight Alliance Network have partnered with Assemblymembers Ricardo Lara and Betsy Butler to propose an audit of California school districts. The audit would determine which school districts are not complying with laws aimed at protecting students from discrimination. Keep students safe by urging the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to authorize an audit of California school districts.

Over the past decade, California has passed several laws aimed at promoting safety for LGBT students. Although all schools are required to comply with these laws, student reports indicate that many schools ignore these laws. In fact, more than 200,000 students are harassed every year because of their sexual orientation. Administrators need to implement these laws in order to provide a safe environment for all students.

The audit is a key step in ensuring the safety of students. It would investigate school districts’ compliance with five bills: Bias Prevention Training for Teachers (2003), Safe Place To Learn Act (2007), Student Civil Rights Act (2007), Seth’s Law (2011), and Fair Education Act (2011). These laws promote tolerance, discourage discrimination, and educate students about historical contributions of the LGBT community. By implementing these laws, schools can significantly reduce bullying and discrimination. Identifying non-complying school districts would give administrators an opportunity to evaluate and improve student safety.

All students deserve a safe learning environment. Tell the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to authorize an audit of California school districts by signing the petition below.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear California Joint Legislative Audit Committee,

Please authorize an Equality California-backed audit that would investigate school districts’ compliance with five bills: AB 1250, AB 394, SB 777, AB 9, and SB 48. These laws improve school safety by promoting tolerance, discouraging discrimination, and educating students about historical contributions of the LGBT community. By implementing these laws, schools can significantly reduce bullying and discrimination.

However, many schools fail to comply with these laws. In fact, more than 200,000 students are harassed every year because of their sexual orientation. School districts need to implement these laws and provide a safe environment for all students. The proposed audit is an important step in ensuring the safety of students. It would identify non-complying school districts and allow administrators to evaluate and improve school safety.

All students deserve a safe learning environment. Please protect students from bullying and discrimination by authorizing an audit of California school districts.

Sincerely,
