Target: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
Goal: Investigate claims of NYPD breaking international law in handling Occupy protesters
Protesters in the Occupy movement constantly find themselves at odds with the police. However, in New York City, there have been reports that the police have taken things too far in controlling the crowd. A group of civil rights attorneys recently released a report showing that the police may have broken international law by abusing and suppressing the rights of the protesters.
Although the protesters have the right to gather in New York City, the police have attempted to control the crowd with excessive and violent methods. Many people have been injured by the police. Others have been arrested for ‘disorderly conduct’ when their actions are protected by their right of free speech. When one of the arrested went to trial, he was released because the arresting officer had lied in his testimony. The extreme amounts of abuse from the police show that they are certainly suppressing the rights of the protesters.
International law protects the protesters from excessive force and ensures their right to free speech. However, this documented abuse from the New York Police Department shows that international law may have been broken in controlling the Occupy crowd. Demand that Mayor Bloomberg create an independent review of the police department to investigate if the law has been broken in these protests.
Dear Mayor Bloomberg:
The Occupy movement in New York City has resulted in many protesters being confronted by the police. There have been multiple reports of the police causing injury to the protesters or suppressing their right of free speech. Many protesters have been arrested without viable cause. The police refuse to admit any wrongdoing in their handling of the protesters.
I ask you to create an independent review of the New York Police Department. The multiple reports of abuse and suppression of rights show that the police may have broken international laws designed to protect the protesters. The actions of the police need to be investigated in order to understand what has happened with the Occupy movement.
