Stop Legal Exports of Ivory

Target: Theresa May, British Prime Minister

Goal: Ban the export of antique ivory from the United Kingdom to stop fueling commercial demand.

The United Kingdom is the largest exporter of legal ivory in the world, according to records from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). More troubling is the fact that these exports disproportionately go to the largely uncontrolled markets of China and Hong Kong, where the legal trade may be masking the sale of illegally poached ivory.

It is estimated that in Africa, an elephant falls victim to a poacher’s gun every 15 minutes. Annually, this adds up to over 30,000 elephants slaughtered to feed an insatiable demand for ivory.

The legal export of antique ivory that has been “worked” or “carved” prior to 1976 is only serving to fuel the overall demand for this material. Sign this petition to urge the British government to stop issuing all permits for ivory exports and to destroy existing ivory products.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister May,

The United Kingdom legally exported 36,000 pieces of ivory between 2010 and 2015, according to a report from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). During that time, antique ivory was sent overwhelmingly to countries where the trade is not well regulated, such as China. In many cases, it is likely that so-called legal sales have masked the illegal trade of poached ivory from Africa. Experts also claim that even legal ivory exports help fuel overall demand.

It is estimated that 30,000 elephants are killed annually in Africa at the hands of poachers. There is no need to support this shadowy market through the export of ivory of any kind. We demand that you call for an immediate ban of all ivory exports and that all existing ivory products be destroyed.

Sincerely,
