Stop Piglet Torture at County Fair

Target: Mary T. Price, Shenandoah County Administrator

Goal: Cancel greased pig scramble at county fair.

The Shenandoah County Fair’s greased pig scramble is a cruel activity that terrorizes and injures over one hundred piglets each year. The innocent and helpless creatures are chased by a crowd of laughing children who leap on them, grab them brusquely, and pull on their legs; this leaves the animals with broken bones and internal injuries.

This is a clear case of animal cruelty that has been going on for far too long, disguised as “entertainment.” Furthermore, it sends a message to impressionable children that animals are lesser beings, that it’s acceptable to treat innocent animals like objects for the sake of their own joy and merriment. Some argue that the pigs will be slaughtered for meat anyway, but that is not an excuse to make their last hours and days on Earth painful and miserable.

There is nothing entertaining about the torture and harassment of small, intelligent creatures. Sign this petition to demand the Shenandoah County Fair cancel this cruel and abusive event.

Dear Administrator Price,

Your county fair’s greased pig scramble is needlessly cruel and inhumane towards hundreds upon hundreds of innocent piglets. The event not only results in many of the piglets suffering broken bones and internal injuries, but sends a message to children that it is okay to torture animals for the sake of their own enjoyment. It suggests that animal abuse is somehow entertaining and that these creatures are little more than objects.

Cancel this event now, and discontinue it permanently. Tradition or not, it is cruel to subject so many piglets to grabbing, pulling, and tackling from children year after year. It is time to let go of this barbaric practice and encourage other, more humane activities as well as respect for the pigs that do not deserve this kind of torture.

Who gives a damn about a bunch of piglets – right? – administer Price??? As long as people have a good time – who cares if some of the piglets get injured – after all they’re just animals that will eventually end up on our dinner table anyway. So if this event takes place – which it undoubtedly will – you won’t mind if I call you an inconsiderate SOB as you evidently have the say as to whether it happens or not. If you cancel this disgusting form of entertainment – you will have my sincere apology for this comment – – –

    • Samantha Blessed says:

Gene Sengstake, piglets are no lesser beings than you. Have a compassion towards the animals and you’ll be thankful for that.

      Ecclesiastes 3:19
For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.

      Exodus 23:5
If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying down under its burden, you shall refrain from leaving him with it; you shall rescue it with him.

      Proverbs 27:23
Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,

      • Samantha…. I think you misunderstood Gene, as he was being sarcastic. After his sarcastic statements, he makes it clear that he considers this a disgusting event.

  2. the county officials who condone this so called entertainment are sending the wrong message about the treatment of animals. They are allowing kids
to abuse these animals at the risk of harming them. They are saying by their
actions that animals are objects to do as you will with them. Not that they are animals that should be treated humanely. they may be brought to slaughter
but it doesn’t give scum bags the right to abuse them.

    Numbers 22:32
And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me.

    • Samantha – Sorry to burst your bubble. But it’s better to know the truth.
There are a few statements in the Bible against animal cruelty, that is true. But the god of the Bible must be a dual personality. He ordered people to be cruel to animals by brutally sacrificing them to him. He ordered people to lay their hands on a goat and transfer their sins to the goat and send the poor goat out into the wilderness to die of starvation and thirst. He brutally killed billions of animals in the flood and thousands in Pharoah’s Egypt. And on and on.
Fortunately, this is all fiction. But the idea of a Bible god is pretty cruel and sadistic.
I used to be a Christian, until I started doing research into the history of the 3 Abrahamic faiths, and found them to be not true. Please consider researching this yourself.

      • Samantha Blessed says:

B Denno, I don’t know about you, but my God is not what you’ve just described him to be. If you really knew God, the way animals were killed or sacrificed was not the same as this scramble we are talking about here. Sorry, I’m not going to change my opinion of Him based on your statements.

        • Samantha – Thank you for your response. I checked out the link, thanks. I know it explains the sacrifice of goats in relation to Jesus – which I understand – but it doesn’t really deal with what happens to the goat after being sent out into the wilderness.
I am not asking you to change your opinion of God based on my statements. What I am asking is that you consider doing your own research into whether Christianity is true or not. If Christianity is true, it will stand testing. All truth can stand testing. Scientists test things over and over again to make sure they are true.
So, for you as a Christian, my question is – do you think you have a right to know for sure if what you believe is true?

“If a man aspires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals.” Albert Einstein

  6. This disgusting event is training for children in cruelty to animals. It is not only cruelty toward the poor piglets, it is child abuse.
