Stop Trump From Censoring Climate Change Report

Target: Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.)

Goal: Do not change or suppress the results of climate report that illustrates the extent and seriousness of climate change and how it is affected by human activities.

Scientists fear that the draft of a comprehensive climate report—which awaits approval by the Trump administration before it can be released to the public—will instead be suppressed or even changed because it contradicts President Trump’s claims that the effects of climate change and human contribution to it are unclear. The report, drafted by scientists from 13 federal agencies, states, “Evidence for a changing climate abounds, from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans.” It also notes, “Many lines of evidence demonstrate that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse (heat-trapping) gases, are primarily responsible for recent observed climate change.”

The thousands of studies that drew these conclusions were conducted by tens of thousands of scientists. It has been called one of “the most comprehensive climate science reports” by one government scientist. Many of those scientists, however, have also expressed fear that it will be dismissed or suppressed by members of the Trump administration, who will not like its findings. Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has publicly said that he does not believe that carbon dioxide is a major contributor to global warming. The E.P.A. is one of the primary agencies that must approve the report in order for it to be released.

Among other things, the report indicates that even if humans immediately stop emitting all greenhouse gases, a significant rise in temperature would still occur over the next century. This means that if no action is taken, the result could be catastrophic. The contents of this vital report must be released. Sign below to demand that the E.P.A. approve the report, not suppress or change it.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

Climate change is a very real and serious threat, and our choices and actions as human beings can make or break the continued existence of our environment as we know it. The draft of a comprehensive climate report—a section of the National Climate Assessment approved by the National Academy of Sciences—illustrates that humans are already experiencing the effects of climate change and that the emission of greenhouse gases does have an impact.

The E.P.A. is one of the agencies that must approve this report before it can be released. The report includes thousands of studies conducted by tens of thousands of scientists, and is one of the most thorough reports of its kind. The importance of this information and the far-reaching effects it can have cannot be underestimated. I urge you to approve the release of this report to the public.

Sincerely,
