End Gun Smuggling to Mexico

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Target: US President Barack Obama

Goal: Enforce gun and ammunition regulation laws in the U.S. to stop gun smuggling to Mexico.

As the recent massacre in Aurora, Colorado shows, military-level assault weapons are dangerously easy for civilians to acquire. The lack of gun and ammunition regulation laws has deadly consequences both in this country and in neighboring Mexico, where nearly 60,000 people have died over the last 5 years in drug-related violence.

In Mexico, the war for control of drug routes and drug profits has created high demand for weapons, and US suppliers take advantage of poor enforcement of regulation laws to sell their arms.

More than 70% of weapons seized in Mexico during waves of violence over the past 3 years and submitted for tracing came from the U.S. It is well known which regions of the US supply the bulk of contraband weapons smuggled into Mexico, but weak legal enforcement allows arms dealers to continue profiting from catastrophe.

President Obama has the power to bring an end to gun smuggling. A wide-ranging coalition of organizations, including Washington Office of Latin America, have submitted a presentation to the White House asking President Obama to strengthen existing law enforcement and in addition require gun dealers to report the sale of multiple assault weapons to the same person.

Sign the petition below to urge Obama to do what he can to enforce weapon control to stop gun smugglers in Mexico and prevent further violence in the U.S.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

In Mexico nearly 60,000 people have died over the last 5 years in drug-related violence. The war for control of drug routes and drug profits has created high demand for weapons, and US suppliers take advantage of poor enforcement of regulation laws to sell their arms.

More than 70% of weapons seized in Mexico during waves of violence over the past 3 years and submitted for tracing came from the U.S. It is well known which regions of the US supply the bulk of contraband weapons smuggled into Mexico, but weak legal enforcement allows gun dealers to continue profiting from catastrophe.

You have the power to stop gun smugglers by strengthening legal enforcement in regions of the U.S. that supply the bulk of the contraband weapons smuggled in and enforce the existing ban on the importation of military-style assault weapons. In addition, require that gun dealers report to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives multiple sales to one client over the period of 5 days.

I urge you to do all you can to end gun smuggling in Mexico by enforcing laws that aim to prevent violence both abroad and in our own country.

Sincerely,
