Don’t Ban Al Jazeera

Target: Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel

Goal: Reverse plans to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel.

Israel has been accused of attacking freedom of the press by seeking to ban one of the Middle East’s largest and most prestigious broadcasters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has accused Qatari cable news channel Al Jazeera of supporting terrorism, and has proposed shutting down their Jerusalem office. According to Israel’s communications ministry, the government also plans on passing legislation that would ban Al Jazeera’s journalists and order satellite and cable companies to stop carrying the broadcaster’s signal.

The move has been widely derided as an attack on press freedom. “Censoring Al Jazeera or closing its offices will not bring stability to the region, but it would put Israel firmly in the camp of some of the region’s worst enemies of press freedom,” said Sherif Mansour, the Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists.

“Israel should abandon these undemocratic plans and allow Al Jazeera and all journalists to report freely from the country and areas it occupies,” he said. If you agree, sign this petition calling for Israel to respect Al Jazeera’s right to exist.

Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu,

Israel often describes itself as the only democracy in the Middle East, yet right now your government is seeking to crack down on press freedom by banning one of the region’s largest broadcasters.

It’s no secret Al Jazeera is despised by despotic regimes such as that of Saudi Arabia, which label its reporting on social and political issues as tantamount to supporting terrorism. Crackdowns on free speech are something we’ve come to expect from Saudi Arabia and others, yet it’s disturbing to see Israel seeking to mimic the same efforts at media repression. As the Committee to Protect Journalist’s regional coordinator Sherif Mansour put it, “ Censoring Al Jazeera or closing its offices… would put Israel firmly in the camp of some of the region’s worst enemies of press freedom.”

Freedom of the press is an integral part of any democracy; if you believe Israel is a democracy, we urge you to immediately halt any plans to censor, ban or stifle Al Jazeera.

  1. Anjum Chugtai says:

Does Israel have something embarrassing to hide? No, it is insufficient to shout fake news and ban. Prove it and prosecute if so.

  2. This is an appalling attack on free speech and human rights.
“Israel is going in a very very dangerous path of shutting mouths, of shutting any criticism from within Israel and from the outside.” – Gideon Levy, Israeli journalist at Haaretz News, and contributor to Al Jazeera.

  3. Al Jazeera has always supported terrorists nations in their news. I don’t blame Israel one bit. Should have kicked them out a long time ago. Israel puts up with a who lot of crap from other countries. We need to stand with Israel..our friends and not always keep trying to make nice with our enemies who don’t care to make peace.

    • Your accusation is outrageous and not based in fact. Have you ever actually read/watched their news? I regularly read/watch Al Jazeera (and many other news sources) and find it very professional and informative – a much-needed voice in the middle east.
Do you not realize that Israel in doing this is aligning itself with the 4 dictatorship states taking action against Qatar? Saudi Arabia – one of the worst dictatorships on earth and hugely involved in terrorism; Egypt – a brutal dictatorship; and Bahrain and UAE, also dictatorships? “We have based our decision on the move by Sunni Arab states to close Al Jazeera offices and prohibiting their work.” – Ayoub Kara, Israeli Communications Minister.
The utter hypocrisy of terrorist dictatorship states accusing Al Jazeera of terrorism is an outrage.
