Target: Jamuna Oil Company

Goal: Improve oil spill clean up in the Meghna River

Local populations in the Barisal District gain livelihood from the Meghna River as a source for water, fish, and other goods cultivated on the riverbed. Jamuna Oil Company has created a direct threat to the vitality of a community who lives off of the land by contaminating the Meghna River. Environmental experts have called for immediate action in treating the exposed waters in order to prevent the anticipated eco disaster.

As a government subsidiary, the Jamuna Oil Company must choose whether it will do ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ by the Barisal people. Benefiting from the natural resources of the area, it is in the company’s best interest to look after those who cultivate the land. To turn a blind eye upon the damage it has caused would indicate a lack of corporate responsibility and disrespect for the sovereign duty granted to it as an entity of the Bangladeshi government.

At the time of the incident, team members were rescued from the river but the tanker has since remained. Oil slicks are present on the surface, a reminder of the company’s negligence. Urge Jamuna Oil Company to initiate clean up efforts today to ensure the ongoing vitality of the Barisal river community.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Jamuna Oil Company,

As one of Bangladesh’s premier oil companies, it is your duty to right your wrongs. Having enjoyed significant growth over the past decade, your vitality has relied upon local allies. Understand that the Barisal community relies on you to assert your authority, now, when it matters most. Remind fishers, farmers, and all other locals that their interest is yours. While the Jamuna Oil Company profits from Bangladesh’s natural oil resources so, too, do fisherman and farmers along the Meghna River.

The people of your country have the right to enjoy their rich lands in the healthy state they have existed. Hear their calls for your help to restore the community’s clean water and farm land.  Initiate clean up today and save the region from environmental disaster. Use your power as a top oil company to set a standard and to be a steward of the environment. Invest time and effort into cleaning the Meghna River while the damage can still be reversed, it is your corporate responsibility to a port city that has made your trade possible.

Sincerely,
