Don’t Send Journalist to His Death

Target: Yury Chaika, Prosecutor General of Russia

Goal: Don’t deport journalist back to home country, where he faces torture and death.

Russia is preparing to send a journalist to his death.  Khodoberdi Nurmatov of Uzbekistan fled to Russia after he was detained and tortured by authorities in his home country. Now, Russia is preparing to deport Nurmatov back to Uzbekistan and into the arms of those who tortured and abused him. Under international human rights laws, this is illegal.

Nurmatov is a journalist who focuses on important LGBTQ issues. He was detained by security authorities in Uzbekistan for rejecting offers to act as an informant against Muslims in the country. He was beaten by those authorities and fled.

If Nurmatov is sent back to Uzbekistan, he will assuredly be tortured once more, or perhaps even die. Uzbekistan is known for its violence against journalists, political opponents, and religious minorities. Sign the petition and demand that Nurmatov not be forced to his death.

Dear Mr. Chaika,

Journalist Khodoberdi Nurmatov, who has sought asylum in your country, will soon be sent to his death. The Russian government wants to deport him back to Uzbekistan, where he will face torture and abuse. Under international human rights agreements, Russia cannot do this.

Sending Nurmatov back to a nation that has tortured him, back to a nation that punishes and kills religious minorities, journalists, and political opponents, is surely a death sentence and a blatant abuse of human rights. I ask that Nurmatov be protected an allowed to stay in Russia.
