Target: Federal Bureau of Investigation
Goal: To stop FBI raids on political activists and anarchists in Oregon and Washington State.
Political activists along the West Coast have recently been the subjects of FBI investigations in an effort to quell government dissidents from outspoken anarchist and anti-government groups. Subpoenas were served on activists in Portland, Olympia, and Seattle, resulting in the seizure of computers, black clothing, and anarchist literature. While the FBI claims that the raids are part of a “violent crime” investigation, only items relating to political affiliations seem to have been seized. The warrants themselves describe plans to obtain evidence relating to crimes of conspiracy to destroy government property and interstate travel with intent to riot.
Because none of the investigations relate to crimes that have already been committed, and items seized are legal to possess (mostly literature, paints, and “flag making material”), it is difficult to see any validity in the grand jury subpoenas that were served. What is more likely is that these raids will help to frighten protesters and anarchists, many of whom have been actively involved in the Occupy movements in Oregon and Washington that organized mass demonstrations all along the West Coast in recent months.
This type of political witch hunt should not be tolerated in the free and open society that America claims to be. It is a form of political repression and is designed to serve as a deterrent to others who wish to voice their political opinions. Sign this petition and tell the FBI to stop coordinated raids on activists and protect the First Amendment rights of all political dissidents.
To the Federal Bureau of Investigations:
The recent witch hunt for anarchists and political dissidents has got to stop. While ensuring that rioters do not destroy government property is within your job description, targeting people because of their political beliefs is unjust and unlawful. The raids that recently occurred in Oregon and Washington State are simply being used as a scare tactic to deter political activists from speaking out against the government, likely because the state is fearful of more large-scale protests like those that closed roadways and ports back in the spring.
Political repression in any form is un-American, and that is exactly what these raids are. When protesters and activists commit crimes, they are taking a risk and should be held accountable for their actions; however, until then, all Americans of all belief systems are free to voice their opinions and gather together to protest unjust inequalities in our government system. We urge that you stop the coordinated raids on activists along the West Coast, and protect the first amendment rights of all political dissidents.
