Goal: Distance the Berenstain Bears from anti-gay Chick-fil-A
The president of popular fast food chain Chick-fil-A set off a media firestorm recently when he made an official statement clarifying the truth of his apparent anti-gay stance and management policies. Among the voices raised in the outcry was that of the Jim Henson Company, the owners of the Muppets, which until recently had a series of toys in Chick-fil-A children’s meals. When the news came out that the Jim Henson company would be refusing to partner with Chick-fil-A in future endeavors and donating the entire payment they had received to an equal rights organization, Chick-fil-A withdrew the toys because of a supposed safety glitch and replaced them with a series of toys based around the popular children’s book series The Berenstain Bears.
Now, the creators of the Berenstain Bears are seeking to distance themselves from Chick-fil-A as well, asserting that the partnership deal had been in the works for over a year before the controversy and that control over whether future partnerships are made stands with Harper Collins, the books’ publishing company.
Continue the fight against Chick-fil-A and let Harper Collins know that you believe the feelings of the Berenstain family should be supported. Ask them to promise that they will make no further deals with Chick-fil-A using either the Berenstain Bears or any other characters.
Dear Harper Collins publishing,
Following the Jim Henson company’s decision to renounce their partnership with Chick-fil-A in response to President Dan Cathy’s open display of hostility towards equal rights for gay and lesbian couples, The Muppets toys present in Chick-fil-A kids’ meals have been replaced with a series of toys based around the popular children’s book series The Berenstain Bears. But the Berenstain family, original creators of the series, seem to be unsupportive of this fact, having made a recent statement asserting that they were unaware of any controversy surrounding Chick-fil-A when the deal was made and that control over the current deal or any further deals lies only with their publishing house – you.
Given the hesitance displayed by the Berenstain Bears’ creator in regards to the Chick-fil-A deal, and given the openly hateful stance that Chick-fil-A has taken, I believe it is time to follow the example set by the Jim Henson company by renouncing the possibility of any further partnerships with Chick-fil-A. Show young readers what’s right by taking a stand for love and equality, and refusing to turn a blind eye for the sake of money or publicity.
