Target: International Olympic Committee and London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games
Goal: Congratulate London on a green Olympic Games and encourage future host countries to follow suit
The United Nations has praised the United Kingdom for the measures it has taken to make the London Olympic Games the greenest to date. According to Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the games are environmentally sustainable due to the collaboration between the UN, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and most importantly, the London Organizing Committee. Inevitably, an international event of the scale of the Olympic Games presents challenges to environmental conservation. This is why UNEP and the IOC have made collaboration a priority. Since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games each successive host nation has raised the bar for ‘greening’ the Games. London should be commended for its efforts to conserve the environment during the Olympic Games.
Some of the actions the London Organizing Committee took to make the Olympic Games environmentally friendly were to build the Olympic Park on a once-contaminated industrial site, restore river habitat, use low-energy design and construction for the stadium, as well as reusing infrastructure. They also employed temporary structures to reduce emissions. During the construction and future breakdown of the Olympic Park, 98% of waste was and will be recycled. London is also the first host city to measure its carbon footprint during the entire Olympic Games, including preparation and breakdown.
There is no doubt the London Olympic Games will be an example for the upcoming Sochi winter Olympic Games and the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games. UNEP is already collaborating with the organizers to ensure minimal environmental impact.
The Olympic Games are a majestic event that brings the world together. They should not harm the environment in the process. Please sign this petition and congratulate London on a job well done for producing a green Olympic Games, and encourage future host nations to do the same.
Dear IOC and London Organizing Committee,
Congratulations on creating an environmentally friendly Olympic Games. Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme has already said that the achievements of the London Olympic Games should be an inspiration for future host nations. Reducing the environmental impact of the Olympic Games is extremely important as climate change increasingly threatens the earth’s future. Your dedication in planning the Games has paid off for the athletes, fans, and the environment.
Some of the measures taken to reduce the environmental impact of the Olympic Games are unprecedented and should serve as an example to upcoming host nations Russia and Brazil. The use of low-energy design and construction, recycling 98% of construction waste, and a commitment to measuring the carbon footprint of the games should be commended.
Once again, thank you for your commitment to creating the greenest Olympic Games to date. Your work not only conserves the environment, but serves as an inspiring example.
