Protect Free Press by Dropping Suspension of Magazine

Target: Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office

Goal: Drop suspension of magazine and protect the free press.

The free press in Dubai is under attack. Arabian Business, a popular economic magazine, has been suspended by the government of Dubai for a month. Print magazines have been halted, and the online magazine has been shut down.

Arabian Business is being silenced because it reported on a story the government of Dubai was unhappy with. The magazine published reports on real-estate projects in liquidation. The government called the story “false” news.

If the government would shut down a magazine for publishing a story about economic woes, what would it do to an outlet that published a piece about political opposition? Journalists must be protected, and the free press must be upheld. Sign the petition and demand that the government of Dubai drop the suspension of Arabian Business.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Al Marri,

The free press in Dubai is under attack. Arabian Business has been shut down for a month for publishing a piece on economic woes in Dubai. Citizens of Dubai cannot access print or online versions of the magazine.

We live in an age in which freedom of the press is very fragile. Silencing the press for a story the government does not agree with is a dangerous move, one that can lead to the collapse of other freedoms. I therefore urge you to protect press freedom and drop the suspension of Arabian Business.

Sincerely,
