Prevent a Media Duopoly in Australia

australia media

Target: Australia Communications Minister Stephen Conroy

Goal: Prevent further consolidation of media ownership

Australia’s richest woman is threatening to turn the media into a duopoly. Fortunately, this threat to democracy may not be legal if a bill in Parliament to prevent the consolidation of media ownership is approved. Urge Australia’s Communications Minister to support legislative measures to prevent a media take-over.

Consolidation of media ownership is a dangerous threat to democracy. At best, the media serves the public as a check on corruption. At worst, a corrupt few use it as a means to narrow and control public views. If Gina Rinehart, Australia’s richest woman, is allowed to buy Fairfax newspapers, the entire country’s media will be managed by two corporate executives.

As the threat of a media duopoly in Australia looms, reform is also gaining momentum. This week, the Greens introduced a bill into Parliament to prevent media ownership changes unless they pass a public interest test. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has expressed support of the idea.  Of course, people like Gina Rinehart and Rupert Murdoch are strongly attacking the proposal. If Minister Conroy sees that enough people back the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Public Interest Test) Bill, Australia has a chance to prevent the unchecked consolidation of its media.

Sign the petition below to encourage Minister Conroy to support legislative measures to prevent media takeovers that threaten democracy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Communications Minister Stephen Conroy,

I am writing to express my support of the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Public Interest Test) Bill and to urge you to do the same.

Consolidation of media ownership is a dangerous threat to democracy. At best, the media serves the public as a check on corruption. At worst, a corrupt few use it as a means to narrow and control public views.

As the possibility of a media duopoly in Australia looms, the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Public Interest Test) Bill and similar legislative measures to prevent media takeovers that threaten democracy provide an urgently needed opportunity for reform.

Please do all you can to prevent the unchecked consolidation of its media. Support the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Public Interest Test) Bill.

Sincerely,
