Don’t Let Trump Attack Affirmative Action

Target: Jeff Sessions, U.S. Attorney General

Goal: Rescind reported plans to divert Department of Justice resources to investigating and possibly suing universities over affirmative action.

Affirmative action has long been hailed as a pathway to ending the U.S.’ historic education inequality, but the Trump administration appears to believe it may discriminate against white people. Now, the Department of Justice is diverting resources from its civil rights division to investigating and possibly suing universities for affirmative action, according to leaked documents cited by The New York Times.

“The document, an internal announcement to the civil rights division, seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on ‘investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions,’” the Times reported. According to the newspaper, the supposed “intentional race-based discrimination” likely refers to “admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants.”

Generally speaking, affirmative action allows universities to take into consideration the ethnicity, race and gender of applicants. This practice has been ruled legal by the Supreme Court, and advocates say it is helping end a racial gap in terms of access to education and jobs. A 2017 study published in the American Economic Journal found that affirmative action can increase employment opportunities for people of color.

If you support affirmative action, please sign this petition calling for the Justice Department to help–not hinder–students of color.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Sessions,

The Department of Justice is facing allegations it plans on cracking down on affirmative action. According to leaked documents cited by The New York Times, the department is concerned about discrimination against white students at universities. It’s hard to take such a suggestion seriously. On the other hand, few people would disagree that the U.S. has a long history of racial oppression towards people of color.

It’s this legacy of oppression that affirmative action seeks to end. Despite what some on the alt-right would have you believe, affirmative action isn’t about white genocide; it’s about creating an equal playing field for future generations. We therefore urge you to order the Department of Justice to commit to leaving affirmative action policies in place, and focus on tackling the real and persistent racism faced by people of color across the country.

Sincerely,
