Save Harmless Family Dog from Death Sentence

Target: Mayor Dick McLean

Goal: Don’t kill a harmless dog simply because of his appearance.

A family dog in Brighton, Colorado is facing death after accidentally left running loose in the neighborhood. The pit bull named Dre hurt nobody, but inspired several complaints for barking and looking “vicious.” Ask Mayor Dick McLean not to allow an animal to be killed just because of its appearance.

Dre was let loose one evening after his family’s young child opened the garage door by remote. Unbeknownst to the owners, the pit bull ran around the neighborhood and was spotted by many residents. Responding to complaints, local police officers had a difficult time capturing the dog, but nobody was scratched, bitten, or hurt in any way during the process. Dre was detained and faces a court hearing soon. A police officer and an animal control officer have stated that they will plead with the judge to have the dog destroyed for his “vicious” behavior. Because there were no injuries, these men are obviously labeling the animal as vicious based on appearance only.

This is clearly another case of prejudice against dogs based upon breed. Dre is not facing death for his behavior. He’s facing death because he’s a pit bull. Dre is a family dog with a loving home, and he’s kept contained at all times with the exception of this one fluke. This harmless animal must be released back to his family where he belongs. By signing the petition below, you can ask Mayor Dick McLean of Brighton, Colorado not to allow this dog to be put to death.

Dear Mayor McLean,

A harmless dog in your community is facing possible death for all of the wrong reasons. The pit bull named Dre belongs to a loving Brighton family whose young child accidentally let the dog loose in the neighborhood. Dre did no harm to anybody, but his bark and intimidating appearance led to several complaints.

Now, a local police officer and animal control officer are pleading with the court to have the dog destroyed on the basis of his ‘vicious’ nature. How can you say a dog that has hurt nobody is vicious? Clearly what these men mean is that the dog looks scary, and should therefore be punished by death. This is blatant breed discrimination and a poor excuse to hurt a loving family dog. Please help Dre get back home to his family. Don’t allow your local government to execute this dog.

  1. How far would I get if I called the police and said that I saw a black man who was acting scary and mean. Then I said I want him put to death because he scared me. would the cops do just that? put him to death even though he did nothing to hurt anyone, just scared me? It’s the same thing, because these people cant just go and kill who ever they want, they are targeting dogs. It’s what makes them feel powerful, to murder something helpless.
