Applaud Democratic National Committee for Including Gay Marriage Platform

File:US_Democratic_Party_Logo

Target: The Democratic National Committee (DNC)

Goal: Applaud decision to include gay marriage in convention platform for the first time in history

Democrats are making history this year by including gay marriage in their platform at the election year convention. The DNC’s 15-member platform drafting committee has agreed unanimously to include a “plank” in their official platform which supports gay marriage and stands against efforts to define marriage federally and nationally as existing only between one man and one woman. The language used will not become official until the full Democratic Platform Committee meets to approve it in mid-August, and exactly what the statement entails is unclear, since the text of the draft was not revealed to those outside of the planning committee.

Efforts to include a gay mariage plank in the national platform increased in momentum after President Obama officially came out to endorse gay marriage being legalized on a state-by-state basis earlier this year. An earlier draft plank circulated in February included language supporting the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act, the law defining marriage as one man and one woman on a national level. Coupled with the President’s official statement of belief that DOMA is unconstitutional, official support from the Democratic party on a national level may pave the way for a repeal in the foreseeable future.

Let the DNC know that you support their choice to include gay marriage in their official platform by signing today.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Democratic National Committee,

I am writing to show my support for the official inclusion of gay marriage as a plank in the Democratic Party’s national platform. Coupled with President Obama’s statements in favor of gay marriage and in opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act, the official support of the Democratic party may be a vital impetus to overturn DOMA once and for all. I applaud your decision, and hope that the language used will take a strong stance in favor of equality for all people and all families.

Thank you for your strength of conviction and your continued support for equal rights.

Sincerely,
