Applaud North Dakota Newspaper for Printing Same-Sex Nuptial Ads

Target: Matt Von Pinnon, editor of the Fargo Forum

Goal: Applaud the Forum of Fargo-Moorehead for printing same-sex marriage ads.

The North Dakota newspaper, Fargo Forum, recently changed its policy on posting wedding ads for same-sex couples. While the paper used to refuse to post these ads, it is now open to posting same-sex nuptial ads. Editor Matt Von Pinnon stated that the job of a newspaper is to report the news whether it supports their views or not, and this applies to marriage ads as well. While some people are against these ads being published, if a homosexual couple is legally married, they should have the same right as a heterosexual couple to get their marriage announced in the paper.

Since many people are still uncomfortable with issues of same-sex couples, it was a very bold and respectable act that the employees for this paper did. They took the risk of possibly losing readers, but they did not let this stop them from fighting for the justice of gay married couples. Not only did the editor of this paper change a significant policy, he also made a bold public statement about the rights of gay couples. This is an incredible act, and the editors and employees of the Fargo Forum must be applauded.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Matt Von Pinnon,

Recently, it was announced that your paper, the Fargo Forum, changed its policy on publishing same-sex nuptial ads. It is extremely kind of you to rethink your policy and start publishing these wedding ads. Many people are still not comfortable with homosexuality, let alone same-sex marriages, so for you to take such a bold stand on this issue not only shows that you respect people in same-sex relationships, but also that you were willing to risk losing readers in order to do what is right.

Many people do not realize that newspapers report all of the news, not just the stories that are in line with their personal views. Newspapers publish stories of all types, and this policy should extend to marriage ads. Like you stated in an interview, many people do not realize that gay marriage is legal in some states, thus a legal gay marriage should get the same rights to newspaper ads as a legal heterosexual marriage. Your bold stance on this issue is greatly appreciated, not only by the gay community, but also by allied supporters of gay marriage. Thank you for making a public statement that will make many people stop and rethink their idea of gay marriage.

Sincerely,
