Do Not Air Controversial Private Videos of Princess Diana

Target: Ralph Lee, Channel 4 deputy chief creative officer

Goal: Do not broadcast personal video tapes, never intended for public domain, of Princess Diana discussing marriage struggles.

Controversial video tapes of Princess Diana talking about her troubled marriage with her speech coach are set to be aired as part of a documentary on Channel 4, despite the protests of her friends and those who knew her. Channel 4 said the tapes “provide a unique insight,” but the princess’s close friend Rosa Monckton is asking the station not to air the footage, as it violates the privacy of the late princess and her family.

The footage was recorded by the man she hired to help work on her public speaking voice, Peter Settelen. In it, she speaks about her husband, their sex life, and confronting him about his affair. As former royal spokesman Dickie Arbiter said,  “These tapes were recorded in private as part of a training session. Anything done behind closed doors remains private.” As he puts it, Channel 4 is “laughing all the way to the bank.” This exploitation and disregard of privacy must not be allowed. Sign below to demand that these private, personal tapes not be publicly aired.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lee,

In compliance with the requests of those who were close to her, I urge you not to publicly air the ‘private’ videos of Princess Diana. The footage, recorded with her speech coach and never intended to be seen by anyone, shows the late princess discussing her struggles in her marriage, sex life, and confronting her husband about his affair. Turning this into public domain is a violation of her and her family’s privacy.

A close friend of Princess Diana’s, Rosa Monckton, has said she is writing to the station to stop the broadcast. As royal biographer Penny Junor  put it, “it is quite obscene that they are showing this – and immoral, frankly…Diana, when she made them… the marriage had just come to an end, they had broken up – she was in a very bad way.” Because she “never intended these tapes to be heard by any living soul,” the broadcast can be accurately described as “exploitation.” I urge you to respect the privacy of the late princess and those who were close to her, and not to air these private and personal tapes.

Sincerely,
