Target: Jeff Bezos
Goal: To express gratitude for donation to same-sex marriage organization
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, has donated $2.5 million to a group called Washington United for Marriage (WUM), an organization dedicated to saving same-sex marriage in Washington. The generous contribution has doubled the funds that were previously available to the group and will be used to fight those who are against Referendum 74 when voting takes place in November. Referendum 74 is the ballot that would formally legalize gay marriage in the state if approved.
Activists are saying that the $2.5 million donation will give them a fighting chance when voters hit the ballots in November. Zack Silk, the campaign manager for WUM, said, “To get this from a straight, married couple sends a powerful message that marriage is seen as a fundamental question of fairness.”
Bezos was approached by Jennifer Cast, a lesbian mother of four and one of Amazon’s earliest employees, and was asked to donate between $100,000 and $200,000 to the cause. In her email to the CEO, Cast said, “I want to have the right to marry the love of my life and to let my children and grandchildren know their family is honored like a “real” family. We need help from straight people. To be very frank, we need help from wealthy straight people who care about us and who want to help us win.” She concluded her email by writing, “Jeff, I suspect you support marriage equality. I beg you not to sit on the sidelines and hope the vote goes our way. Help us make it so.”
The response she received was short and sweet: “Jen,” Bezos replied, “this is right for so many reasons. We’re in for $2.5 million. Jeff & MacKenzie.” According to the New York Times, Bezos and his wife have since become “among the largest financial backers of gay marriage rights in the country.” Sign now to thank this courageous CEO for taking a standt against marriage segregation and helping to support a crucial battle for equality.
Dear Jeff Bezos,
In regard to your incredibly generous donation to Washington United for Marriage, I want to thank you for standing for equality and publicly showing your support for the end of marriage segregation. The battle to save same-sex marriage in Washington needs all the assistance it can possibly get. Having the support of such an influential CEO could possibly mean the difference between a win and a lose. Referendum 74 must be approved if equity is to be reached in Washington, and your donation will help make that goal a reality.
I applaud your courage for joining the fight to bring about marriage equality, and I will certainly shop through Amazon.com more often to show my thanks. Thank you for doing the right thing by simply supporting this brave movement, and thank you for your donation to Washington United for Marriage.
