Protect the Pacific Fisher From Extinction

Fisher_(animal)

Target: California Fish and Game Commission

Goal: Protect the Pacific fisher from extinction

A close relative of the wolverine and mink species, the Pacific fisher is a mammal in danger of becoming extinct in several Western states. In California, only two significant populations of fishers exist–one being in Northwestern California and another in the Southern Sierra Nevada region. These animals face several dangers to their existence, mainly from trapping, logging, and land development which has significantly reduced their population. Recently, courts have ordered the California Fish and Game Commission to reconsider its decision to deny them protection under the Endangered Species Act.

There are rumored to be less than 150 female adult fishers in California now, and in order for them to survive and thrive, they must be protected. Fishers are almost extinct in Oregon and Washington, and they are in serious trouble. They are slowly losing their precious habitats and have had to face new threats like disease, development, and traffic.

In 2008, the commission tried to reject a similar petition after failing to conduct a full scientific review. It downplayed the threats to the species and denied them protection under the act. Now, the court is asking the commission to reconsider its decision with an independent and competent peer review, which will be used in order to determine whether to list the species as endangered or not. Its recommendation may in fact determine if the Pacific Fisher continues to thrive, or instead dies out from a lack of protection and care from the state.

If you care about saving a valuable species and preserving an important part of our ecosystem, then sign this petition now to urge the California Fish and Game Commission to protect the fisher. It is time for them to be given the protection they deserve and need.

PETITION LETTER

Dear members of the California Fish and Game Commission,

I would like to urge you to protect the Pacific fisher by granting it recognition under the Endangered Species Act. This species is being threatened by several factors including the loss of their habitat due to development, as well as logging, trapping, and disease. I was surprised to hear that these animals have almost died out in several states on the West Coast. It is important for California to protect its animals and prevent any from becoming extinct.

Please reconsider the information from peer reviews as well as recommendations to save this threatened species. It is important to preserve the fisher before it completely dies out as a result from a lack of protection. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

  1. Ignoring animal extinction is also promoting our own extinction.
