Release Journalists Wrongfully Detained

Target: Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s foreign minister

Goal: Release journalists in Myanmar who were detained wrongfully by the nation’s military authorities.

Journalists in Myanmar were wrongfully detained and now face serious threats from the military government. They were only doing their job and interviewing rebel groups in the deeply divided country. However, they have now been detained by the military and charged with “unlawful association.”

These journalists may face up to three years in prison. Journalists have a duty to report two sides of an issue. This does not make them traitors or criminals.

This action on the part of the military in Myanmar is disturbing. It is a threat to all journalists throughout the country. It silences them with fear. Sign the petition and demand that these journalists be released.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Suu Kyi,

Journalists in your country have been wrongfully detained. They face up to three years in prison simply for interviewing a rebel group that stands in opposition to Myanmar’s military rule.

These journalists did nothing wrong. Like any journalist should, they attempted to capture both sides of a very fragile issue in your country. Myanmar is just starting to transition to democratic practices, but this very serious action can cause the democracy to collapse before it even fully takes flight. I ask that you use you leadership power to release these journalists and defend press freedoms.

Sincerely,
