Target: United States Congress
Goal: Immediately close the Dawood Military Hospital in Afghanistan and prosecute Lt. Gen. William Caldwell for his crimes.
Despite a great deal of effort to cover up the terrible conditions at the Dawood Military Hospital in Afghanistan, images of the “Auschwitz-like conditions” of the facility have recently surfaced in US news sources. Pictures from the hospital show patients with gangrene and open wounds that have been left untreated, patients on the verge of starving to death, and operations taking place in non-sterile environments with no anesthetics. The cover-up of the grim conditions at the hospital, orchestrated in large part by Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, served to mislead the American people on the conditions and successes of the War in Afghanistan, a common practice according to many involved in the conflict.
Patients at the Afghan hospital, which was staffed in large part by the Afghan National Army and the US Medical Training Advisory Group, were often left untreated for political reasons, including being members of different clans or because the patients’ families did not have the money to pay bribes to have their loved ones cared for. While the Pentagon recently released a statement claiming that changes have already been implemented within the hospital, almost all of the staff (many of whom neglected or intentionally harmed patients) remain.
When he was first told about the military inquiry into the hospital, Caldwell responded by asking why they would make that request “with an election coming.” It is clear to see from his statements and the overall concealment of the operation that this Hospital is a disgrace to the American Army and the people in America and Afghanistan that have paid heavily for these tragedies to occur. Sign this petition and tell the United States Congress to close the Dawood Military Hospital and prosecute Lt.Gen. William Caldwell for his crimes.
To the United States Congress:
The Dawood Military Hospital in Afghanistan is a disgrace to the American people who are unknowingly funding this atrocity. While some members of the operation believe they have pulled the veil over our eyes and made the war in Afghanistan look like a success, we now know better. The photos of patients starving to death, with sickening infections and open bed sores, are a disgusting embarrassment to the people of this country and to this congress, and it must be stopped at once.
It has become clear despite statements from the Pentagon that nothing is going to be done to correct these atrocities without pressure from Congress. The investigation by the House Oversight Committee was a positive first step, and brought to light many important details. However, now that we know the facts, it is time to act. This is why we urge you to close the Dawood Military Hospital immediately, and prosecute Lt. Gen. William Caldwell and other guilty members for their crimes against these innocent people.
