Release Elephant from Horrific Conditions in Zoo

Target: Sheikh Ansar Aziz, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA)

Goal: Relocate Kaavan the elephant from the the Islamabad Zoo where he is reportedly living under highly inadequate conditions.

Kaavan the elephant is still living in apparently terrible conditions at the Islamabad Zoo even though he was supposed to be relocated to a sanctuary in Cambodia, a move determined to be in the elephant’s best interest back in July of 2016. Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee agreed that freeing the neglected and abused elephant was “the right thing to do,” and senators in Pakistan recommended the move. However, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) still “owns” Kaavan and refuses to release him because of the profit he generates at the zoo.

For 30 years Kaavan was kept in chains. Following public outcry, he has been mostly chain-free since late 2016, but his feet are reportedly still injured and in urgent need of veterinary care. He also may have internal damage from years of being kept in these conditions, but currently he has no veterinary care at all. His living quarters still appear to be deeply inadequate for his health and safety, and recent pictures show that he had no water in his pool in the summer heat.

This treatment of this innocent elephant is deplorable and has been going largely unnoticed since the decision to move Kaavan to a sanctuary was publicized so long ago. Many are unaware that the decision was never carried out. Sign below to demand that Kaavan be relocated to the Cambodian sanctuary that is waiting for him.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Aziz,

The treatment of Kaavan the elephant—who is still being kept in apparently inhumane conditions at the Islamabad Zoo despite the 2016 decision to relocate him to a sanctuary—is unacceptable and cruel. The CDA must comply with Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee and release Kaavan.

Kaavan lived in chains for three decades, and is still exhibiting stereotypic behavior that Four Paws International calls “severe.” Despite orders to improve Kaavan’s conditions, no changes have been made whatsoever, and recent photographs show no water in his pool while temperatures rise as high as 41 degrees Celsius in Islamabad.

Kaavan is also allegedly without access to much needed veterinary care, and his mahout would not be able to save him in the case of illness or infection. As was determined by the Senate Standing Committee in 2016, moving him to the Cambodian sanctuary that volunteered to take him is the right thing to do. I urge you to release Kaavan from the zoo and relocate him to the sanctuary.

Sincerely,

  7. Has the Pakistan senate standing committee no authority over the CDA? Who has? The point is, this abused elephant should be in a sanctuary as you recommended some time ago. So why is he still suffering in that hellhole called islamabad zoo? Show your authority- get him out and send him to where he will be treated decently by people who know how to keep elephants and will not abuse him. He has suffered long enough.
