Target: Giles Academy Headmaster Chris Walls
Goal: Publicly apologize for humiliating a transgender student and promise to support Giles Academy’s LGBT students.
When Ashlyn Parram, a transgender girl, arrived at her school in Lincolnshire wearing the school’s traditional uniform for female students, the headmaster promptly told her to change into a boys’ uniform. Otherwise, he said, “he” would be banned from taking the GCSE exams that day and would be unable to graduate from high school. Tell Headmaster Walls that his lack of compassion and understanding toward those with gender dysphoria is completely unacceptable.
According to the UK Sun, this wasn’t the first time Parram felt utterly humiliated because she happens to be transgender. Previously, the paper reported, a teacher “was warned for imitating Ashlyn’s walk in front of pupils.” Another claimed that gender dysphoria “doesn’t exist.” Instructors also forced her to take swimming lessons with male classmates.
After these incidents, Parram had had enough. Instead of changing into the boys’ uniform, she decided to stand up for herself. According to LGBTQNation, she returned to the school with a copy of Britain’s Equality Act. Headmaster Walls then admitted that he couldn’t legally prevent her from taking the exam. She sat through the test alone.
“The way Ashlyn has been treated by the school is just appalling,” said Miranda Johnson, Parram’s mother. “To be made to sit on your own during an exam like that is horrendous. It shouldn’t be allowed to happen in this day and age – especially not in schools.”
Though a school spokesman denied allegations that Parram was treated unfairly, it seems clear that much work needs to be done before transgender students feel comfortable in the Giles Academy community. By signing the petition below, you will tell Headmaster Walls that he must work to end transphobic sentiments at Giles Academy.
Dear Headmaster Wall,
Referring to Ashlyn Parram, a female-identified student at Giles Academy, as a “he” and a “him” is mortifying enough, but initially barring her from allegedly taking the GCSE exams is utterly reprehensible. In addition, by allegedly allowing instructors to mock her walk and force her to take swimming lessons with boys, you are condoning the ridicule, fear, and misconceptions of transgender people.
Parram is part of a severely oppressed minority group, and deserves to feel safe in her own school. It is imperative that you put an end to this hurtful rhetoric against transgender students at Giles Academy and issue a public apology for humiliating Parram in front of educators and classmates. Please commit to taking action immediately.
