Target: CEO of Jamba Juice, James D. White
Goal: Stop using styrofoam containers in all store locations.
Styrofoam is very harmful to human health and the environment, making up the largest percentage of marine debris around the world. Jamba Juice uses an absurd number of styrofoam products every day, causing great damage to the Earth with each “healthy” smoothie they sell. We know Jamba Juice can stop using styrofoam altogether, since they don’t use any styrofoam containers in cities where it is not allowed.
The creation of styrofoam is absolutely toxic to human health. Styrofoam is the trade name for polystyrene, a petroleum-based plastic made from styrene. Both the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have labeled styrene as a potential human carcinogen due to the acute health complications it has on the nervous system. The chemicals that are used to make the plastic stay in the styrofoam containers and can leach into the water or food, especially when exposed to heat, causing severe damage to the human reproductive system.
Additionally, styrofoam is terrible for the environment. Making styrofoam releases 57 chemical by-products that are heavy pollutants of air and water sources. The product itself is non-biodegradable because it is resistant to photolysis, meaning generation after generation will have to face the consequences of our convenience. Since styrofoam floats, an outrageous number of polystyrene materials have accumulated along coasts and waterways throughout the world, which is why it is now considered to be the main component of marine debris.
Jamba Juice has stopped using all styrofoam in locations such as Seattle where styrofoam cups are illegal. Sign the petition below to urge the company to commit to using recyclable or compostable materials in all their locations.
Dear Mr. White,
As a concerned customer, I am disturbed by the alarming amounts of styrofoam that your company uses every day. Styrofoam is very harmful to human health and the environment, making up the largest percentage of marine debris around the world. As a company that claims to promote health, I urge you to stop using all styrofoam materials and commit to using recyclable or compostable materials in all your locations.
Many companies have made the commitment to eliminate their use of styrofoam materials. Even Jamba Juice does not use any styrofoam in cities where it is not allowed, such as Seattle, Washington. This goes to show that it is absolutely possible to use different materials. In fact, because it is well known that you do not use styrofoam in various locations throughout the country, it is inexcusable that you do not do the same in all your other locations.
Please act as quickly as possible to create this company-wide change to keep health-conscious consumers like me.
