Target: United States Legislators
Goal: Don’t deny women access to Planned Parenthood health services and contraceptive coverage.
Recently, the GOP released yet another bill that would jeopardize women’s health and well-being. The Labor, Health, and Human Services funding bill seeks to deny Planned Parenthood clinics the money they need to provide health services to three million people across the nation. It would also allow employers to deny women access to birth control under guise of “moral reasons.”
This new bill indicates a lack of understanding about women’s health and a dismissive attitude toward the workings of Planned Parenthood. Aside from providing access to abortion, which comprises approximately 3 percent of their services, the clinics offer counseling, screenings for cancer, and treatments for curable diseases. To reduce or terminate the funds of this organization would be detrimental to millions who benefit from their services. Planned Parenthood also offers care at lower costs, making it the only available and affordable method of care for many low-income individuals.
The bill would also allow employers of any institution to deny female employees contraceptive coverage. While the attempts to discriminate against women in this manner seem exhaustive considering the recent partisan efforts to exempt religiously affiliated organizations from covering preventative health services for females, the battle ensues. According to Nancy Keenan, the President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the bill epitomizes anti-choice leaders’ “War on Women” by attacking their privacy. In addition, it goes against the constitutionally upheld Affordable Care Act as well as the American value of freedom. While many still oppose Planned Parenthood and contraception for moral reasons, those who are most vehemently opposed to abortion should be most supportive of any methods that decrease unwanted pregnancy.
Although the bill is not anticipated to make it to the House floor, it is important to let our legislators know that proposals such as this do not align with American values and should be opposed. Remind our government that oppression has no place in the law today.
Dear United States Legislators,
I urge you to stand up for women’s choice and freedom by opposing any bill that seeks to remove health care or limit preventative health services. The Labor, Health, and Human Services bill proposes the defunding of Planned Parenthood, an organization that millions depend on for service, and it grants employers the option to refuse contraception coverage to female workers for moral reasons.
This bill exemplifies everything that this nation opposes. We are not a people run by oppressive laws, and we are founded on the separation of church and state. To limit funding to health care is oppressive and to restrict contraceptive coverage is blending religious moral code with state ordained policy. Please stand up for Americans who support health and freedom.
